A monumental inscription is a copy of the information on a headstone or other memorial plaque at a grave or a place where ashes are interred or were scattered.
As many of the people who create catalogues of monumental inscriptions are family historians, monumental inscriptions may contain only information of genealogical significance, such as names, dates and family relationships. Monumental inscription may not always copy other information on a headstone, e.g. military service, bible verses, poems, etc.
Lists of monumental inscriptions should not be confused with Burial Registers as there may be burials without a surviving headstone to be recorded in the monumental inscriptions.
