Virginia, Lancaster County Estates 1835-1865

This three-year project was undertaken by the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library with a matching grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, this project abstracted every recorded estate record in Lancaster County from 1835 to 1865, comprising 1,343 documents. A primary objective was to identify every slave named in wills, inventories, accounts and estate divisions. Over 3,000 slaves were identified, though of course some of them are the same person going from the decedent to an heir who also died during this time frame. There were 520 decedents during this period, with 1,755 beneficiaries. The searchable results are on line at (summary) and (searchable and interactive database by decedent, beneficiary and slave name).
