Headstone

When a person is buried, there is often a marker of some kind placed on the grave.

A marker placed at the head end of the coffin is known as a headstone. A marker placed at the foot end of the coffin is known as a Footstone, but this is not well-known and many people used the term headstone or gravestone for both.

A headstone doesn't have to be made of stone, but traditionally the ones that have survived the longest were made of stone, such as marble.
