A French land measure, most commonly for area, but also linear. Used primarily in the 16th to 18th centuries, its use continued in Quebec and Louisiana into the 20th century. It is the common land measurement found in Acadian records.
1 arpent (square) = .845 acres or 3,418.9 square meters
1 arpent (linear) = 191.833 feet or 58.47 meters
There are some variations. For example, in urban Louisiana the arpent measures are the same as those above, but in rural Louisiana the arpent is slightly larger (191.944 feet or 58.504 meters).
Sometimes spelled arpen.
